Student Handbook
Because today’s families have become accustomed to the convenience of accessing information online, our student handbook is now available only online at the school website, centraldayschool.com>parents>cdshandbook. If you would still like a printed copy of the handbook in a pdf format, please email the office at cdsoffice@centraldayschool.com or call the school office, and we will be happy to drop one in the mail to you. You and your child should read the online handbook carefully to make sure you understand CDS procedures and policies. An academic calendar for the new school year can also be found online at the school website's homepage or by clicking here.
Supplies and Summer Reading Lists
Supply and required summer reading lists for returning students were mailed with report cards in June. New students should have received a supply and required summer reading list as well. This information can also be found on the home page of Central Day School’s website at centraldayschool.com. Kindergarten supplies and first grade community supplies are provided by the school. Click here for Supply List. Click here for Reading Lists.
In order for the school to provide a safe and nurturing learning environment for a student who has been diagnosed with a serious health condition, an Individual Health Plan will be developed in concert with parents, attending physicians, and school personnel. This cooperation will require a high level of communication to create an effective partnership between parents/guardians and school personnel to care for your child. In the event a student has been previously diagnosed or is diagnosed during the school year with diabetes, a life-threatening food allergy, seizures, a heart condition, or other significant medical conditions requiring an IHP, parents/guardians will be required to meet with school administration and other personnel determined to have a primary role in the development of the student’s Individual Heath Plan (IHP) before the child may attend school. If your child has been diagnosed with such a condition, please contact the school office to make an appointment.
Students with Inhalers CDS has a protocol to accommodate students who have need of an inhaler at school for asthma or other breathing problems. Parents of students who have been diagnosed with asthma or other breathing problems requiring a prescription inhaler are required to follow the procedures for Central Day School’s Asthma Management Protocol in order for a student to self-administer an inhaler at school in compliance with Tennessee state laws. Click the link above for a copy of the Asthma Management Protocol and permission forms for your child’s physician to complete.
Orientation Day
Monday, August 8, is Orientation Day. Come with your child anytime between 8:30 a.m. and noon. Attendance will be taken on Orientation Day. Students do not wear uniforms on Orientation Day. Parents should enter the Education Building at the entrance marked 2005 West, then proceed to the Fellowship Hall before visiting the classrooms.
In the Fellowship Hall, there will be a packet for you with items to keep which will include car line instructions, a car line identification card, a free activity calendar, and free CDS Lightning Pass (parent pass.) This pass, which clips on, allows parents to by-pass the first floor sign-in and come straight to the second floor school office when visiting the school. (Parents must always sign-in in the office before visiting the classroom.) Make sure to throw away last year’s lightning passes as they are updated every school year.
First Day of School
Tuesday, August 9, is the first full day of school. Regular school hours for all grades are from 8:15 a.m. until 3:15 p.m. Parents will be charged a late pick-up fee of $1 per minute for any student who is not picked up by 3:30 pm or until car line is finished, which ever is later. Central Learning Center provides on-site before and after school care for our students from 7:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. “Drop-in” care service will be offered by Central Learning Center again this year. In order to use the drop-in care, Central Learning Center has registration forms to complete and fees that need to be paid before using this service. For more information about this program, or weekly before and afterschool care please call Central Learning Center at 255-8133.
For the safety and efficiency of all involved, it is important to observe the car line directions from the first day of school. Car line information and traffic patterns will be available on Orientation Day and are also available on the CDS website home page. There are no changes in carline from last year.
