Is my child too sick to go to school?

With the flu season upon us, it is important for parents to be especially vigilant about their child’s health.  The school is taking extra precautions to prevent the spread of communicable diseases as much as possible.  The guidelines below are provided by the Memphis/Shelby County Health Department.  Do not send your child to school if he/she has:

·         A fever

·         Unexplained rash

·         Vomiting

·         Diarrhea

·         Pus or drainage from the eyes

·         Productive cough

·         Behavior that indicates a child feels too bad to function at school

Parents will be called to pick up any student who exhibits any of the symptoms listed above. A child should not return to school until they are free of these symptoms for 24 hours.  Let’s follow these rules for a healthier student body.

Lunches begin TOMORROW.
Lunches begin tomorrow! If you have not place your lunch order for the remainder of the first quarter, the order form will be online until 10:00 p.m. Tuesday. After 10:00 p.m., the order form will be closed and late orders will not be accepted. Click here to complete your order.

Dog Day Volunteers

We are so excited to have a former CDS parent, Mr. Karl Birkholz, return this year to coordinate our CDS Dog Day.  Karl’s son Jimmy graduated from CDS this past May.  We need parent volunteers to help Mr. Birkholz prepare 300+ hot dogs for our CDS students.  The first Dog Day is this THURSDAY, September 3.  Volunteers meet in the kitchen (next to the Fellowship Hall) at 10:45 a.m.  Volunteers are vital to the success of this program.  To help, please call Dana Whitworth at (901) 734-3771.

Keep on Selling!

Fall Fundraising information was sent home last Friday.  There are brochures with something for everyone and great prizes for the students.  Help support CDS by offering these items to your family and friends — please remember, no door-to-door selling!  Don’t forget to have your customers make the check payable to you and then you will write one check to CDS-PTF.  If you choose not to participate, the PTF gladly accepts cash donations.  Questions? Call Jennifer Sisson at (901) 489-7225.

CDS Chess

Kindergartners through eighth graders are invited to learn to play chess at lunchtime beginning the fourth week of September.  Chess Club is under the direction of Beckie and Kaolin Levantino, experienced chess teachers at CDS.  There are two different classes based on skill level — beginner (Wednesday) and experienced (Friday).  There will be a tournament in the spring were students compete for trophies.  The cost is $35 per family per semester.  Registration/permission forms are available online.  You may pay online or by sending a check made payable to CDS to the school office in an envelope marked “Chess.” The deadline to sign up is Friday, September 11.  To register for Chess Club, click here.

Duke Talent Identification Program

We would like to share an opportunity available to our new seventh graders called the, “Duke Talent Identification Program (TIP).”  A select number of students from public and private schools within our region have been invited by Duke University to take either the ACT or SAT college entrance exam (according to your preference), which is the same test secondary students take during their junior and senior years of high school. The intent is to identify and recognize students at the middle school level who demonstrate academic excellence and provide opportunities for future scholastic advancement.

In order to qualify, a student must score at least a 95 percentile in a core subject area on a standardized test — such as, the Stanford Achievement Test that was administered last spring or, for new students, part of the admission testing.  The students listed below have met the criteria and have been invited to participate in the Duke TIP program.

Daniel Ashcraft, Parker Fleming, Madison Foster, Robert Mihalko, John Parks, Hannah Romine,

Jonathan Russell, Christian Sidebottom, Rebecca Smith, John David Wiles, Tim Zmudzinski

Congratulations, well done!
