From the Desk of Principal John Spice
Once again, it is time for Parent/Teacher Conferences. This is the time to connect with your teacher, establish an effective working relationship, and discuss your child’s progress at school. As you prepare for the conference, please consider the following ingredients to a successful meeting:
1. Appreciate the fact that to a large degree, your child’s success at school will be the result of open lines of communication and mutual support between home and school.
2. Active listening is a prerequisite to meaningful communication.
3. Collaborating with your child’s teacher and demonstrating a willingness to work through areas of disagreement provide for a unified front, maximizing the opportunities for success.
Following are some other, more practical steps you may want to consider in planning for your conference:
1. Ask your child if there is anything that he would like you to discuss with the teacher.
2. Arrive promptly or a few minutes early.
3. Jot down everything that you want to talk about at the conference.
4. Begin with positive comments about the teacher or classroom.
5. Avoid lengthy discussions of topics that are not related to the purpose of the conference.
6. Be open-minded to suggestions from the teacher.
7. Keep your emotions under control.
8. Take notes about what has been discussed to share with your child.
9. Express appreciation for the conference.
10. Do not stay beyond your allotted time.
I have also included a short little definition of "active listening" below that I found helpful in the communication process.
|
|
WHAT IS ACTIVE LISTENING?
(ELMHURST COLLEGE LEARNING CENTER)
Listening and hearing are not the same. Hearing is the first stage of listening. Hearing occurs when your ears pick up sound waves which are then transported to your brain. This stage is your sense of hearing.
Listening is a communication process and, to be successful, is an active process. In other words, you must be an active participant in this communication process. In active listening, meaning and evaluation of a message must take place before a listener can respond to a speaker. Therefore, the listener is actively working while the speaker is talking. How can this happen? It is simple. Our thought speed is much faster than our speech speed. But be careful! Don't allow the thought speed to race into daydreaming. This habit will defeat your attempt to become an active listener.

Parent-Teacher Conference - Thursday, October 22, Early dismissal at 12:15 p.m.
Sign-up sheets are posted on the wall next to your child’s classroom door. Conferences will be held in the classrooms and will last 15 minutes. We encourage all parents to schedule a conference on October 22nd, especially if you have a concern with your child’s progress. If you need a longer conference, or you cannot make it on the 22nd, please check with your child’s teacher for a convenient time. Middle School parents do not need to schedule a conference with each teacher. Middle School conferences should only be scheduled with the teacher of the subject where there is a concern. Please note: Children are not allowed to attend the parent-teacher conference. On conference day, parents should park in the west parking lot. Please do not park in the driveway in front of the main entrance. Your cooperation is appreciated.
** Thursday, October 22, is a HALF DAY. **

Food Drive Info
Here at CDS, we have the privilege each year of participating in a canned food drive for the needy living in our own neighborhoods. What a great opportunity to put our faith to action, and teach our young people to do the same! School is not always about rules, books, homework, and tests. It is also a place where students learn of God’s plan for their lives and the Kingdom work he has called each one of us to do. CDS will kick off our Annual Food Drive next week in conjunction with Central Learning Center and the Parent’s Day Out and Preschool. In next week’s Tuesday Informer there will be a list highlighting the items most needed by the families in our community. So, please start checking your cupboards now! May we encourage each family to take advantage of this time to teach Kingdom principles by giving to those who are in need.

Discovery Workshops
In your Tuesday Informer envelope there is a handout with a list of discovery workshops CDS teachers are offering this quarter. Workshops are an excellent way for children to investigate their talents and gifts while having fun! The teachers involved are devoted to providing an enriching experience in an encouraging, Christian environment.
