** Fall Break … October 12-16. Plan something fun! **
|
| From the desk of Principal John Spice …
Lessons from Eddie Haskell
|
| The year was 1957. The setting was a sleepy little town in the heart of middle America. Two teenage boys were shooting baskets while preparing for the upcoming championship basketball game with cross-town rival, Edgewood High. As strategies for the game were discussed, Wally’s younger brother, happened along. “Hi-ya Wally! Hi-ya Eddie! What-ya doin?” interrupted Theodore (AKA, The Beaver). Eddie, who had an aversion to younger brothers something akin to chicken-pox, sneered at Theodore. “Scram, you little creep. Can’t you see we’re busy? “Knock it off, Eddie,” interrupted Wally, who was usually pretty good about defending his younger brother against the verbal insults of his not-so-mature friend. Much to Eddie’s chagrin, Wally allowed his brother to stay on the condition that he not interrupt or bother Eddie. As the older boys continued to strategize for the big game, Theodore couldn’t help himself and interjected, “Gee, Eddie, do you think we have a chance against Edgewood?” As if on cue, Eddie approached the Beaver menacingly. He pointed to the young boy and threatened, “Now listen, you little twirp. You interrupt me one more time and I’ll ring your scrawny little neck! You here me? Now mind your own business!” |
|
|
Eddie was still glaring at young Theodore when Mr. Cleaver, the boys’ father pulled up in his station wagon. “Hi boys! Have a nice day at school?” “Yeah. It was OK,” replied Wally and the Beaver, who then gave a brief narration of the day’s events. Turning to his son’s friend, Mr. Cleaver then asked, “And How are you Eddie?” “Oh, just fine, Sir!” said Eddie with sickening-sweet emphasis. “Wally and I were just showing the Beaver some shots at the basket. You know, Sir, he’s such a fine young man, and I really think he has great potential as a basketball player! I believe it is our responsibility as the older generation to be role models to those coming up behind us, and help them in whatever way we can - don’t you agree, Sir?” Not to discourage what was said, Mr. Cleaver simply responded, “Sure, Eddie,” all the while thinking to himself, “Who does he think he’s kidding?”

Fifty years ago, people who talked out of both sides of their mouth like Eddie were called hypocrites, and unworthy of our trust. Try playing that same sitcom today, and see how a character like Eddie might fare. In today’s cultural landscape where the ends justify the means, a character like Eddie Haskell may even be esteemed in life, especially if those in positions of authority around him are perceived as underserving of his respect, which also seems to be sadly lacking in today’s society.
There is another standard, however, that God is anxious for His children and the world to know. Consider, for example, the following passages of Scripture:
· Proverbs 26:28- “A lying tongue hates those it hurts, and a flattering mouth works ruin.”
· Psalm 15:1-3- “Lord who may abide in Your tabernacle? Who may dwell in Your holy hill? He who walks uprightly, and works righteousness, and speaks the truth in his heart; he who does not backbite with his tongue, nor does evil to his neighbor.”
· Ephesians 4:25- “Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to his neighbor, for we are all members of one body.”
Our mission is to honor and glorify God by providing an excellent education with a Christian foundation, in a safe and encouraging environment. May the Lord continue to bless those efforts as we partner with parents to teach God’s children to be people of integrity. Our future and theirs depends on it.

Grandparent’s Day Program
CDS cordially invites all grandparents of CDS students to attend our special Grandparent’s Day Program on FRIDAY at Noon. If a student doesn’t have a grandparent that can attend, we invite grandparent “stand-ins” like an aunt, uncle, friend, or even mom or dad. The event will begin at Noon when grandparents are invited to bring lunch and eat with their grandchild in their classroom, Fellowship Hall, or other designated area. A program honoring grandparents will follow in the Worship Center. Parents are welcome to attend the musical program as well. Please join us for this special day! Students will return to class after the program. Please note: Lunch will not be served on Friday. If someone is not attending to bring your child a lunch on Grandparent’s Day, please send a lunch.
Important Grandparent Day guidelines:
· Grandparents can pick up their grandchild(ren) from classroom at NOON. Students will not be dismissed to go to the Fellowship Hall without a grandparent or a note that they may go with another child’s grandparent.
· Grandparents are welcome to stay in the classroom and eat with their grandchild. There are four other areas designated to eat lunch besides the classroom: the Fellowship Hall on the first floor, Room 252 on the second floor, the chess club lunch area on the second floor, and the second floor lobby with the picnic tables. Please ask grandparents to select an area that is convenient to your child’s classroom location.
· If a student is leaving after the program, please send a note with the student in the morning. They must return to the classroom after the program to be checked out with the teacher. This is a full day of school and students will be responsible for any work missed if they leave early.

NO CASH, Please…
When paying for lunches, fundraisers, or registering for an activity or event please send your payment in the form of a check or money order or payment may be made on-line with a credit card or debit card. In the past, we have had situations where parents sent cash to the school office via their child and the child misplaced the money. Checks, money orders and credit/debit cards are traceable and a much safer way to make the transaction.
